Heute gibt es das erste Kapitel des digitalen Booklets von Wizard Of Oz, in dem ich euch die musikalischen Kollaborateure vorstelle.
Kennt ihr das? Man trifft jemanden zum allerersten mal und hat sofort irgendwie einen Draht zueinander? Es passiert selten und ist deshalb immer was besonderes. Als Bruce Soord und ich uns 2023 das erstemal trafen, kamen wir zunächst erstmal aus dem Quatschen nicht mehr heraus. Fast so, als würden wir uns schon ewig kennen, hätten uns aber vor 20 Jahren aus den Augen verloren. Der Chef-Ananasdieb stand hoch auf meiner Wunschliste, für ein alternatives Wizard Of Oz Gitarrenarrangement. Also schaute ich auf Bruces Website und fand da: „Wenn ich nicht mit meinen eigenen Sachen oder The Pineapple Thief Material beschäftigt bin, arbeite ich gerne mit allen Arten von anderen Künstlern zusammen, produziere und mische.“
Na dann!? dachte ich und schrieb ihn an, erklärte ihm meine Wizard Of Oz Idee und fragte ihn, ob er sich auch eine Song-Kooperation vorstellen könne, bei der er nicht nur produziert und mischt, sondern auch ein Gitarrenarrangemet und Background Vocals mit beisteuert. Demo anbei. Zu meiner großen Freude kam relativ schnell die Antwort „Yeah, all of the above.“ zurück.
So kam also eines zum anderen und wir trafen uns in zweimal im kleinen südwestenglischen Städtchen Yeovil. Herausgekommen ist die Grab a Soord and fight Version , die ich schließlich zur Hauptversion erklärte. (Die Idee des Untertitels war meine. Wir haben sehr gelacht.) Bruce ist ein Mensch, der auf Überraschungen steht. Das spiegelt sich auch in seinen Arrangements wider: „Ich spiele zunächst die Standard-Idee, die mir als erstes in den Kopf kommt. Die schmeiße ich dann weg und überlege, was ich stattdessen anders machen könnte.“ Und so unterstrich er zum Beispiel in der Endesktion des Songs die Basslinie mit der Gitarre, setzte nach der Hälfte den Blinker und ging auf die Überholspur. Mega Idee.
Darüber hinaus mischte er neben seiner Version auch die Conversation in Hamelin Variante sowohl in Stereo als auch in Dolby Atmos.

An Bruces eigenem Songwriting fasziniert mich, mit wie wenig Worten er unglaublich viel auszudrücken vermag, dabei Interpretationsspielraum lässt und man dennoch gedanklich genau da ankommt, wo er einen hinführt. Vielleicht ist das auch nur bei mir so. Und vielleicht ist auch das der Grund, warum wir geklickt haben, weil wir gedanklich und in unserer Weltsicht offensichtlich wirklich ähnlich unterwegs sind.
Anekdote dazu am Rande: Lange bevor wir uns kannten, hatte ich gedanklich für die Wizard Of Oz EP mit dem Titel Different Versions Of The Same Truth geliebäugelt. Dann kam er mit The Pineapple Thief um die Ecke und nannte sein Album Versions Of The Truth. Ich verdrehte die Augen und dachte: Na gut, dann halt nicht.
Bei unserem zweiten Treffen 2024 erzählte ich ihm auch, dass der Mensch, der Porcupine Tree und King Crimson Drummer Gavin Harrison und ihn zusammen gebracht hat, einen ganz eigenen Grammy in einer völlig neuen Kategorie bekommen sollte. Bruces melodiös-melancholisches Songwriting in Verbindung mit dem extrem kreativen Drumming eines der weltweit besten Prog-Drummers ist das beste an Rockmusik, was mir in den letzten zehn Jahren unter gekommen ist. (Das 2024er Album It leads to this erreichte die Nummer 1 in den UK Rockcharts. Er meinte: „Wir hatten Glück, dass in dieser Woche kein anderer Act was veröffentlicht hat.“ – Nene, mein Freund. Das war schon verdient!) Mein persönlicher Favorite ist The Frost. So geht moderne Rockmusik und nicht anders.

Today, the first chapter of the digital booklet of Wizard of Oz is being released, in which I introduce you to the musical collaborators.
Do you know that feeling? You meet someone for the very first time and instantly have a connection? It rarely happens, and that’s why it’s always something special. When Bruce and I first met in 2023, we couldn’t stop chatting at first. It almost felt as if we had known each other forever but had lost touch 20 years ago. The chief pineapple thief was high on my wish list for an alternative Wizard of Oz guitar arrangement. So I checked out Bruce’s website and found: „When I’m not busy with my own stuff or The Pineapple Thief material, I enjoy collaborating with all kinds of other artists, producing, and mixing.“
Well then!?, I thought and wrote to him, explaining my Wizard of Oz idea and asking if he could imagine a song collaboration where he wouldn’t just produce and mix but also contribute a guitar arrangement and background vocals. Demo attached. To my great delight – unlike with Gavin, as we know – the answer came relatively quickly: „Yeah, all of the above.“
So one thing led to another, and we met twice in the small southwestern English town of Yeovil. The result was the Grab a Soord and fight version, which I eventually declared the main version. (The idea for the subtitle was mine. We had a good laugh.) Bruce is someone who loves surprises, which is reflected in his arrangements: „I first play the standard idea that comes to mind. Then I throw it away and think about how I can do something different.“ For example, in the final section of the song, he emphasized the bass line with the guitar, put on the blinker halfway through, and moved into the fast lane. Brilliant idea.

What fascinates me about Bruce’s own songwriting is how he manages to express so much with so few words, leaving room for interpretation, yet still guiding you exactly to where he wants your thoughts to go. Maybe it’s just me. And perhaps that’s the reason why we clicked, as we seem to be on a very similar wavelength in our thinking and worldview.
A little anecdote on the side: Long before we knew each other, I had toyed with the idea of titling the Wizard of Oz EP Different Versions of the Same Truth. Then he came around with The Pineapple Thief and titled his album Versions of the Truth. I rolled my eyes and thought: Well, okay, then not.
During our second meeting in 2024, I also told him that the person who brought Porcupine Tree and King Crimson drummer Gavin Harrison and him together deserves a Grammy in a completely new category. Bruce’s melodious-melancholic songwriting combined with the extremely creative drumming of one of the world’s best prog drummers is the best thing that has happened to rock music in the last ten years.
